Giving Fallen Trees a Second Life

Spencer Peterman's work begins with an appreciation for the natural character of wood. Rather than sourcing virgin lumber, the company primarily uses trees that have already fallen or been removed for other reasons. Almost all of its wood comes from Western Massachusetts and would otherwise be chipped, burned, or discarded.

Spencer especially enjoys working with unusual materials such as burl wood, spalted maple, and ambrosia maple, allowing the grain, color, and markings of each tree to become part of the finished piece.

Every bowl and board is crafted in New England by skilled makers and finished with natural, food-safe wood finishes.

From Basket Weaving to Woodturning

Spencer began his artistic career as a basket weaver, making Nantucket baskets before discovering woodturning at craft shows more than 25 years ago. He soon realized that turning bowls offered a creative way to make something useful and beautiful from trees that might otherwise go to waste.

Michele Peterman joined the business as co-owner in 2007. An accomplished artist herself, Michele brought experience from building a successful pottery business and became an integral part of growing the company.

Together, Spencer and Michele have built a family business rooted in creativity, resourcefulness, and community. Their collection includes turned bowls in classic round and organic oval shapes, serving and cutting boards for everyday meals and entertaining, and servers made from bowl blanks that might otherwise be scrapped.
