The Law Firm Answer Index is a free, fully public monthly ranking of the firms ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI assistants name when people ask for a lawyer using a largely public methodolgy. The rankings answer a question law firms increasingly face: when a potential client asks an AI assistant for legal help, which firms come up? Consumers now put those questions to tools such as ChatGPT alongside, and often instead of, a traditional search engine, and the firms named in those answers are reaching clients before a search results page is ever seen.
Each edition scores firms on share of voice: how often AI assistants name the firm across a standardized set of consumer-style legal questions. The flagship National 100 is built from a 300-question set covering the major practice areas. Results are presented as a ticker-style board. Each firm carries a four-letter code, with its share of voice quoted alongside monthly movement. Domain rating and organic traffic appear as context columns, so readers can see where AI recommendations diverge from traditional search authority.
The Answer Index is deliberately open. There is no email gate, no sponsorship, and no way to pay for a position. AEO Engine clients that qualify for an edition are included, marked as clients on the board, and measured identically to every other firm; no firm is force-ranked. Exact questions are kept private to prevent gaming, ten retired sample questions are published with each edition, and journalists can review the full methodology under NDA.
"When someone asks an AI assistant to recommend a lawyer, the answer usually contains a handful of firms, and most firms have no way of knowing whether they are in it," said Vijay C Jacob, founder of AEO Engine. Editions are measured over the first three days of each month and published on the fifth. The September 2026 editions, publishing September 5, will be the first to report month-over-month movers and fallers. Any firm can search an edition for its name and request a detailed AI visibility report directly from the edition pages.
